We asked to Dr.Doany about further investment plans of Turkish Telecom:

Question – 13 : What are your investment plans for the year 2007 – amount and areas to be invested?

Dr.Paul Doany : As mentioned, we are planning a major increase in our investment plans in 2007, reaching approximately YTL 1.3 Billion.

There will be significant investments to support ADSL growth as well as in modernizing the company’s transmission and access networks that will continue to improve the quality of service offered to our customers. The installed capacity is planned to exceed 6 million ports, and may even reach just below 7 million, depending on market development. This will mostly cater for residential segment, but we will also expand products and service offerings to the corporate sector.

The total investment will be around 18% of the expected revenues in 2007 which far exceeds the normal investment levels of most telecommunications companies.

The total investment since privatization through 2007 should reach around YTL 2.0 Billion and is part our commitment to invest in network expansion, service quality and state of the art service offerings.

Question – 14 : What is the total international outgoing bandwidth capacity? Do you have any plans to increase this capacity during the year 2007?

Dr.Paul Doany : The international outgoing bandwidth capacity is currently 52 Gb/s. Projects aiming to increase this capacity are underway, with the objective to increase this capacity to 130 Gb/s, in four routes in total, by the end of this year.

1st Route: Istanbul-Girit- Sicily Medtrk submarine fiber optic cable system
2nd Route: Se Me We – 3 Mediterranean submarine fiber optic cable system
3rd Route: Edirne-Athens terrestrial fiber optic cable system
4th Route: Krkllareli-Sofia terrestrial fiber optic cable system

We offer IP connection to Frankfurt, Amsterdam, London, Paris and New York POPs through these 4 routes, which back up each other.

Frankfurt POP is owned by TT and TT will have IP connections over its own POPs also in Amsterdam, London, Paris and New York by the end of this year.

International voice traffic is carried through Se Me We, Kafos, TBL, ITUR cable systems. In addition, we are working on other alternative routes.

With the existing cable systems, TT offers voice, Internet and data services to both international and local companies and telecom operators.

We also offer capacity to the telecom operators in some neighboring countries, including Georgia, Syria and Iran, providing connections to Europe and the US.

Due to the geographical position of Turkey, one of our targets is to be an internet bridge between Europe and Asia.

Question – 15 : What is your opinion about the Turkish Vendors’ market? You must have heard that especially modem vendors have expressed that they face problems regarding TT modem tenders. Can you please give us your opinion?

Dr.Paul Doany : TT and TTnet have run tenders for modems in the past, and will continue to do so. Of course, TTnet are the ones who lead this effort nowadays, so all decisions come from their side. I don’t know what you mean by problems for modem suppliers or vendors, given that we have invited many bidders in the past, and selected the suitable products at the lowest possible prices we can obtain. That is what all telecommunication companies do.

We believe there is much room on the market for growth – there is also a market for customers who prefer to buy their own modems, and also of course, there is the market driven by the competing ADSL service providers, who are bundling their own modems as well.

Rather than seeing a problem, quite frankly, I see a great opportunity for everybody.

At the following chapter, ISP and Long Distance Carriers relations will be discuss. See at Doany : Wholesale Tariffs at TK Approval Stage – 7
