Graduates Need Additional Skills to Become Embedded Systems Industry Proficient

23 July 2014 – Embedded software competency experts, Feabhas, are supporting graduates entering full-time employment, who lack the practical and theoretical skills needed in todays embedded environment.

Experience of working with leading organisations to support their embedded software competency skills, has led Feabhas to identify that while graduates are generally taught how to programme, they are rarely taught how to find out what to do and how to prioritise work tasks. Good employers typically address this gap through mentoring, training and experience but it can often take around two years to acquire all the necessary good practices required to be a competent software engineer.

As a result, Feabhas is supporting employers looking to reduce the time it takes for this years graduate intake to develop their embedded software competencies. The Feabhas FastTrack Programme is designed to enable graduates to become competent embedded systems engineers within 90 days.

Each FastTrack Programme is developed in conjunction with the graduate employer and comprises seven progressive courses on: basic foundation skills in software development, programming, platform technologies and real-time operating systems, systems design, software quality and testing. The one week on/two weeks off format, allows the graduates the opportunity to learn the new skills and then hone them on real projects, back in the workplace.

Niall Cooling, Managing Director at Feabhas says Todays graduates are entering the embedded systems industry at an exciting time; devices are becoming more compact, more complex and more connected. The sooner a graduate can be productive, the better it is for everyone. Thats why we have developed the FastTrack Programme.

As well as providing the training, we also conduct a confidential pre- and post-course assessment at each stage to provide a clear measure of progress and competence. Employers can use these reports both to check progress and also to help identify those who are particularly well-suited to certain types of work, such as testing or systems design this can be particularly useful where the graduates have the opportunity to work in different roles or are on a rotation programme.

Employers with an intake of 4 12 graduates can have the programme run on-site at their chosen location and individual places are also available on the public programme, based in the UK.
