New PacketBand from Patapsco

Patapsco’s new PacketBand TDM enables IP networks to emulate leased lines, so enabling clocked synchronous or legacy data to be delivered over IP, MPLS, Metro and Ethernet networks. As leased line costs far exceed those of IP networks, particularly for international circuits, this could result in massive financial savings for users, together with increased business opportunities and margins for carriers, mobile operators and systems integrators.

For example, PacketBand TDM offers great potential for IP-based carriers who are currently unable to offer leased lines, or who wish to utilise their national or international IP network to ‘break-out’ for delivery of the ‘last mile’. Also for carriers who have a traditional switched circuit or TDM architecture and wish to migrate customers seamlessly onto an IP network without network changes.

Other groups to benefit include mobile operators that need to deliver E1/T1 TDM services for 2 and 2.5G networks as well as IP-based 3G services. They can now use a cost effective IP infrastructure for both, backhauling the G.704 leased lines over IP rather than using expensive circuits. Whilst systems integrators can take advantage of PacketBand by offering customers leased line services over an IP network.

Finally, large corporate users with an existing IP network can ensure substantial cost savings by transferring legacy leased line services onto their IP network, using a combination of Patapsco products.

PacketBand TDM

PacketBand TDM provides full circuit emulation services over IP (CESoIP) or TDMoIP for clock-sensitive synchronous traffic over asynchronous non-clocked IP networks. The first in the range of products, PacketBand TDM supplies one, 2, 3 or 4 E1/T1 circuits. These can be either clear circuits or full/fractional and will generally be established permanently or on a time-of-day basis.

PacketBand TDM is very ‘soft’ and easy to install, it uses an intuitive GUI to configure, manage and upgrade the system. It also offers grooming capabilities combining multiple remote circuits into a single circuit at the central site or PoP location.

Other features include total transparency to all data formats; support for 1GE, dual Ethernet/IP connectivity for resilience; various clocking options with very high quality clock recovery; configurable packet size; compensation for ‘jitter’ or packet delay variation; low latency or processing delay; VLAN and Double VLAN tagging; full Quality of Service (QoS) options; and time of day configurations. PacketBand TDM meets all current and draft standards including Y.1413.

Explained Paul Strawbridge, Managing Director at Patapsco Communications, “Traditionally, organisations would use leased lines to transport synchronous or legacy data, whilst retaining IP for voice and data packets only. Now, with PacketBand TDM this has changed and synchronous traffic can be transported over low cost IP networks.

“This is a win-win situation. Carriers offering IP will be able to extend their services to include virtual leased lines across the IP network; mobile users can benefit by using IP rather than leased lines for backhaul; systems integrators have a host of potential new sales opportunities and the end user can save money!” he said.

Following the launch of PacketBand TDM, Patapsco Communications will be working towards the next product in the series to offer ISDN network emulation.
