Five per cent of people questioned had at one time become so bored with the conversation they fell asleep.
Simon Carter, Head of Post Office HomePhone commented: ‘‘With this research we were hoping to find out more about the ways in which people use home phone services, so we could improve the service we offer. Instead we seem to have uncovered some peculiar British eccentricities.’’
Respondents aged 55 and over were the most relaxed and attentive with more than half preferring to sit down and give callers their full attention, compared to 39 per cent of 16 to 24 year olds.
People in Northern Ireland have the least time to stop and talk with nearly 70 per cent preparing dinner while chatting. More than half of the Welsh respondents enjoyed a tipple while on the telephone, saying they often chatted with a glass of wine in their hand.
