Long predicted, the convergence of fixed-line and mobile services is now a reality. As a result, there is a growing need for messaging solutions that bridge the gap between the fixed-line and mobile worlds, providing a more reliable, robust and easy-to-use experience for consumers. In response to this need, Swisscom will deploy Memova™ Messaging – an open, standards-based messaging platform that supports converged communications services.
“Leveraging a long, successful relationship with Critical Path, we are excited to expand our capabilities by deploying a centralized messaging platform. The platform will enable us to support both fixed-line and mobile services, and we can achieve a number of important synergies,” said Charles d’Heureuse, CTO of Swisscom Fixnet’s Bluewin. “Memova Messaging minimizes our infrastructure costs and allows us to get to market much faster with new fixed-line and mobile services that provide a better, more integrated experience for Swisscom subscribers.”
Memova Messaging provides a broad range of services operators can easily turn on or off once they deploy the platform. Designed to support the convergence of mobile and fixed-line communications, these services include: PIM (Personal Information Management) with mobile phone back-up and synchronization services; fixed-line and mobile email; media mail for the sharing of large files; online photo and multimedia file storage; Web-based SMS and MMS; as well as a full suite of messaging and collaboration services for small businesses. Key features, such as the platform’s network address book, can be easily extended to support applications beyond email and PIM synchronization, such as push-to-talk, IM (Instant Messaging), conferencing or VOIP services. The network address book also serves as a solid foundation for service providers rolling out IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) architectures.
“The next generation of messaging is upon us,” said Mike Serbinis, CTO, Critical Path. “Having built the Internet email foundation for hundreds of service providers, Critical Path is uniquely positioned to help service providers take their messaging platforms to the next level. Memova Messaging combines proven email technology with the industry’s broadest range of converged fixed-line and mobile messaging services that improve the consumer experience and drive significant revenue.”
Swisscom Fixnet Bluewin expects to complete the deployment of Memova Messaging by the end 2005.
