The Death of the Wedding Present

Wedding presents were once an obligation for anyone attending a friend or relative’s special day. But a new study by one of the UK’s leading online gift retailers has revealed that the wedding gift could soon be a thing of the past.

After surveying 1,156 people leading online gift retailer, www.prezzybox.com, has discovered that wedding gifts are no longer as popular as they once were. 68% of people questioned claim to have given money rather than a present at a wedding.

Home accessories such as toasters, towels and dinnerware were once very popular wedding gifts. However, more people now prefer to give money or a small memento to the bride and groom as most couples already have what they need prior to the big day.

Almost 70% of couples now cohabit before they get married, meaning that practical presents that were once bought to help the couple out are no longer a desired gift. High end gifts like keepsakes and experience days are now a more popular choice as family and friends purchase these to treat the couple rather than to help them out.

When asked “What would you prefer to be given as a gift for your wedding?” only 13% said they would prefer a gift for their home or garden. Almost half of the people surveyed said they would favour money or gift cards whilst 4% claimed presents weren’t important.

84% of people said that if they were given money as a gift at their own wedding they would use it to help pay off the costs of the service and honeymoon while 5% claimed they would save it.

The survey by Prezzybox also revealed that 3 in 5 gifts that are bought at weddings are for the bride and not a joint present for the couple. The men seem to get left by the wayside on the big day.

Speaking about these findings Zak Edwards, MD of Prezzybox.com said;

“It’s really interesting to see how traditional gift-giving has changed over time and it came as no surprise that people no longer desire bread makers as a present to celebrate their big day! Our eCard gift vouchers are really popular, proving that many visitors prefer to opt for the gift of choice.

He continued, “Weddings are typically a very female event, but it’s a shame to see that us guys get a bit left out when it comes to getting gifts. There are plenty of boy’s toys available for the groom at Prezzybox, but I’m not sure many brides would be impressed by the antics of Terry the Swearing Turtle, so perhaps he’s best saved for birthdays!”
