4 June, 2012, Dusseldorf Toshiba Electronics Europe (TEE) has today announced the worlds first family of solid state drives (SSDs) with a 19nm NAND Flash process. With an unrivalled combination of capacity, performance and power efficiency, the THNSNF range will deliver an uncompromised storage solution for high end notebooks, tablets, PCs, all-in-one desktop computers as well as industrial PC applications. The small form factor drives boast a high capacity of up to 512 GB[1] and are available in a range of sizes: THNSNFxxxGBSS (9.5mm height, 64, 128, 256, 512 GB), THNSNFxxxGCSS (7.0mm height, 64, 128, 256, 512 GB) and the THNSNFxxxGMCS (mSATATM, 64, 128, 256GB).

As the inventor of NAND flash technology, Toshiba has pioneered innovation in the SSD market. It now delivers the worlds smallest and highest density NAND flash solid state drive, utilising its advanced Multi-Level Cell (MLC) 19nm NAND technology. Toshibas new series of SSDs will help OEMs balance the increasing demand for high storage capacity with the demand for more streamlined devices.

As we enter the zettabyte[2] era of data, an increasingly heavy workload is being placed on storage solutions. The new THNSNF family is twice as fast as the previous generation[3], offering read transfer rate of 524 MB/s and write transfer rate of up to 461 MB/s.

It is important, now more than ever to maintain data integrity whilst delivering faster access speeds. The THNSNF range of SSDs features Toshibas QSBCTM (Quadruple Swing-By Code), a strong and highly efficient Error Correction Code (ECC) protecting against any read errors in the device. With an additional data corrupt protection feature, the THNSNF SSDs range protects any data which is being moved internally, against unexpected power-loss and write errors. Furthermore, deterministic zeroing TRIM function is supported. This allows the host operating system to inform the SSD about data blocks which are no longer in use, so they can be wiped internally. With built in read only mode, users will still be able to access their data should the drive become damaged or lose write ability.

The new range has been developed in accordance with Toshibas on-going commitment to environmental responsibility. Each drive is halogen and antimony trioxide[4] free. The THNSNF series utilises Advanced Power Management (APM) technology to control energy consumption levels, essential in energy-sensitive applications. The drives also boast the best energy efficiency levels in the world – by using MobileMark2007 Workload, each drives consumes less than 0.1W of power.

Digital data is on the rise and in todays electronics devices, space is at a premium. The new range of SSDs shows you dont have to choose between capacity and performance. By utilising 19nm NAND flash technology, the THNSNF range delivers more capacity on smaller chip real estate, said Martin Larsson, vice president, Toshiba Electronics Europe. Weve pioneered SSD technology and with the introduction of 19nm NAND flash, the THNSNF family is another milestone in the Toshiba storage story. Toshiba is the only vendor to manufacture and supply a complete storage product line up of SSDs and 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch HDDs. This new range of SSDs will offer equipment manufacturers an uncompromised storage solution; combining high capacity, state-of-the-art performance, reliability and efficient energy consumption.

Volume production of the THNSNF family of drives will start in August 2012.
