TT’s Project is 2.2 M ADSL Users & 45 GBps in 2005

It is notable that Turkish Telecom’s aims about ADSL subscriber numbers and overseas internet connection speed are so assertive. CEO Mehmet Ekinalan had pointed out that the reason for their failure about their goal of 1 million subscribers by 2004 was due to the ‘Public Tender Act’.

Turkish Telecom is planning to reach 45 Gbps overseas internet connection speed in response to 2.2 million ADSL subscribers. It is reported that the number of ADSL subscribers by the end of 2004 was 470,000 and the goals for 2005 are planned as 920,000 in March, 1,370,000 in June, 1,820,000 in September and 2,270,000 in December.

These assertive goals look as if they were good news for the development of internet and telecommunications, but on the other hand when we consider that dozens of user mails that arrive everyday mostly complain about ADSL problems, these questions arise: Will the problems increase by the same ratio? Or will the problems lessen as a result of increased goals?

We had announced about the innovations that Turkish Telecom has made in their call centers and the new project that they plan to deploy this year. With the project that gives their solution partners a more active role, the ADSL subscribers will be able to receive service. So, the problems about the modem, PC and copper cabling which are at the user’s side is planned to be eliminated. Of course, this aim that offers the reduction of many problems has to deal with the server side also, which is within the Turkish Telecom. It is anticipated that there will also be problematic areas there.

Turkish Telecom’s Objectives

The 2 separate tenders that Turkish Telecom organized for the overseas internet connection capacity for the 1+8 lines that are STM-16 (22,5 Gbps) from Turkey to Europe and USA will be held on 23rd February and 22nd March 2005. Turkish Telecom is planning to buy the transmission services that start from any border point in Turkey, including Greece border (Kesan), Bulgaria border (Kapikule, Malkoclar), to the POP centers in Amsterdam, New York, London and Paris, in order to supply with the international bandwidth demand.

The period is planned for every capacity to be deployed within 2 years after the signing of the contract, and 5 years long for each capacity. Turkish Telecom will be able to assign additional jobs up to 20% of the contract price to the same contractor.
